  • Listed as Antipathes spiralis Pallas by Pourtalès (1880: 114-115), Brook described it as a new species in 1889. This specimen was located in the type collection (x.1998) with a "Blake" label reading Antipathes spiralis Pallas and a newer label reading Stichopathes occidentalis Gray but with no designation as to it being a type specimen. The type card for S. pourtalesi has the following typed information: "All specimens previously identified by Pourtales as A. desbonni in 1874 and 1878 and then identified by him as A. spiralis in 1880 are syntypes of A. pourtalesi. Many of these specimens were later reidentified as Stichopathes lutkeni and Stichopathes occidentalis." Continuing the sentence is the following handwritten addition, possibly by Dennis Opresko: "by E. Deichmann. Brook did not designate any of Pourtales material as types. There are ~23 lots of specimens in MCZ Type Collection marked as "type."
