Howell-Rivero 1938, page 196, Holotype of Mesoprion campechanus Poey 1860:149 Types: M.C.Z. 9982, two specimens the largest of which is the holotype. No. Poey 71.
Rivas 1966, page 124, Voucher of Lutjanus purpureus Howell-Rivero (1938, stated that the types of campechanus comprise two specimens (mcz 9982) the largest of which is the "holotype." A study of these specimens...shows they... are...(L. purpureus) and neither...could have been Poey's type ...for the following reasons...original description of...campechanus...based on a single specimen 370 mm. in length.... The largest specimen, considered by Howell-Rivero as the "holotype," is 355 mm in total length, 15 mm short of the required length.

  • As noted by Howell-Rivero there were two specimens in this lot, he considered the larger to be the holotype. Only one specimen found when reviewed 28 July 1998. Loan 65-30 to Rivas lists the 'paratype' under MCZ 44400.
