handwriting on paper note found with specimen reads 'Type of Chelonia depressa Garman, young, really is C. japonica or ally. This is the basis of Garman's saying "East Indies + Australia" for habitat. It is the only specimen which was available for Garman's study at the time depressa was described + Garman remembers that the young described was an alcoholic of this size. T.
